"By Blood, I am Albanian.By Citizienship indian,By faith, I am a Catholic nun.As to my calling,I belong to the world,"Said the angel in human form Mother Teresa.Her selfles work among the poor of Calcutta (Kolkata)is an inspiration to people across the World.
Mother Teresa born on 26 August 1910,in Skopje ,the capital of Macedonia,At the age of twelve,she decided that she wanted to be a missionary and spread the love of Christ. At the age of Eighteen she left parent home in Skopje,and joined the Sister of Loreto in 1928,an Irish community of nuns with the mission in india,were she took the name Teresa after St.Teresa of Lisieux, a patron of missionaries.After an initial training at the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Dublin, Mother Teresa came to India.
On 24 May 1931, she took her vows as a nun.From 1931 to 1948,she taught Geography and Catechism and worked as Principal at St.Mary High School,Kolkata. In 1948,she came across a dying woman in front of a Kolkata hospital and she cared for her till her death.She then decided to dedicate the rest of her life for the poor people in India.
After a short course with the Medical Mission Sister in Patna,she returned to Kolkate and found temporary lodging with Little Sister of the Poor.She started an open air school for homeless children and was soon joined by voluntary helpers.She received financial aid form Church organisations and the municipal authorities.
On 7 Oct 1950, she received permission form the Vatican to start her own order,which came to be known as the" Missionaries of Charity".The primary objective of this missionaries was to look after the woman who had no one to care for them.The Missionaries of Charity which begin with just 12 Members,today has a following of more then 4,500 Sisters running orphanages,AIDS,hospices and charity centres all over the world caring for refugees,the disabled,the unwanted the aged,the alcoholics and the victims of natural disasters like floods,epidemics,famine,etc.
She was affectionately called Mother.Her whole life followed the attitude of humility and she served God by doing the most down-to-earth works with a cheerful heart.She was passionate about love for the living beings.She followed this principle all her life.
Her strong belief was -the things that were looked down by man,were highly honoured by God.In 1952,Mother Teresa opened Nirmal Hriday,a home for the dying destitutes in kolkata,and extended her work in all the five continents of the world.
She became a citizen of India in 1962.She was loved by people for her selfless service to the poor.She was regarded as the angel of mercy.In 1965,the Pope granted her a Decree(an official order or decision made by a leader or government)of Praise,which allowed her to expand her order to other countries as well.The first house outside in India was Venezuela.Today,the Missionaries of Charity has its centres in more than a hundred countries.
Mother Teresa has been recognised and acclaimed across the world and has received many awards and distincitons for her philanthropic work.Some of these include Pope John XXIII Peace Prize in 1971, Jawaharlal Nehru Award  for International Understanding in 1969, The Balzan Prize in 1978.
She was awarded the most prestigious Nobel Prize for Peace in 1979.She was also awarded the Bharat Ratna award in 1980 for all her achievements.In 1985,she received the Prisidential Medal of freedom from the United States.In 1990, Mother Teresa's health started deteriorationg and she had to put an end to all her activities.She chose Sister Nirmala to be the leader of the Missionaries of Charity.
Mother Teresa died on the 5th  of September,1997.just nine days after her 87th birthday.She was beatified(Mother Teresa was declared a Saint by the Roman Catholic Church)by Pope Paul II on 19 October 2003,with the title Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta.
Mother Teresa is regarded as a role model of holiness by the people of this modern world.
